In addition to being an acclaimed comic strip artist, “Little Nemo” creator Winsor McCay is also remembered as a pioneer in the field of animation, with 1914’s “Gertie the Dinosaur” being his most remembered animated project. Little Nemo’s cigar-chomping clown friend Flip can also be seen perched on the bed watching Nemo from above as he falls down. This aspect of the comic is recreated in Toon Lagoon at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, with an oversized bed serving as part of facade for one of the area’s gift shops. The ornately illustrated comics centered around the adventures of a young boy during his surreal dreams and often ended with the title character waking up after falling out of bed. Among the most popular and acclaimed newspaper comic strips of the early 20th Century was Winsor McCay’s “Little Nemo in Slumberland,” which originally ran from 1905 to 1926.
